Living in Comfort

Jeffrey and Jane Brown, along with their daughters Sarah (Sadie) and Madeline (Maddee), have moved to rural Comfort, Texas in order to be near Jane’s mother.  Jane grew up here, but Jeffrey had been immersed in a totally new environment.

This blog is Jeffrey’s attempt to share a year’s worth of observations on that experience.  I hope you enjoy it.

Hey Jeffrey – Living in Southern Comfort…ha! I heard you had a blog, but just found this on google. I wanted to see what your family’s plans were for the summer and see if I can get Lorna and Maddee together somehow for a visit. One idea I had is to see if she could come up to Lookout Mountain for a week of Camp Lookout with Lorna. I can likely get two scholarships to cover the entire costs and maybe help pick her up or take her back home depending on the scheduling…might be tricky, but thought I would try. Otherwise, perhaps we could come down for a long weekend and visit. I’ve never been to Texas…and Lorna really misses Maddee. It would be great to see you all. We have all missed each of you. I hope you are getting settled in your new life and hope Jane’s Mother is doing well.

new job: St. Andrews Center in Highland Park and director of development for the Hartnell Farm project (involves land stewardship and a writers conference…cool combo…it is a sixty acre farm in Hixson…former family dairy owned by former superintendent of Hamilton County Schools whose Dad was a united methodist and his wife was a 20+ year veteran spanish teacher….the grown children donated the land for a $1 lease a year to the St. Andrews Center that works with new immigrant children and families and is the downtown Chatt State campus for ESOL and GED courses. It is a cool place to work. I have stained glass windows in my office because the building is a 100 year old former methodist church…we have a community garden too….so a lot of cool stuff happening and the kids and I live near there. I am following my calling and this dec should finish my masters in creative writing, poetry in a new grad program at UTC. What are you all doing these day? teaching? theater? singing? living comfortably?
    Best – Laurie

Hi, Lauire – great to hear from you. We’re going to do our best to see that Maddee gets to see Lorna over the summer break – try giving Jane a call on her cell, it’s the same number as always (423-645-9047) to work on details. I’m glad to hear about the new job, too. Good luck with everything! JB
